An Ultrasound guided breast biopsy is a very simple and near pain-free procedure. You will be asked to lie down in the Ultrasound suite, and initial localization of the lesion will be performed by the doctor. Then the skin will be sterilized and a sterile drape will be placed over your breast. A small amount of lidocaine will be injected to numb your skin, and a biopsy needle will be guided to the lesion using Ultrasound guidance. One or more biopsies are obtained through the same needle. After the numbing of the skin, you should feel no pain.
Specimens are sent immediately to a pathology lab. You leave the Ultrasound suite with only a small band-aid over the area of the biopsy.
